New in Oslo 2019
Clarion Hotel The Hub recently opened in the former Royal Christiania building right by Oslo Central Station. The hotel has clearly been sympathetically redeveloped and on the thirteenth floor you’ll find the Norda restaurant, where the creative director is none other than Marcus Samuelsson. The menu is full of Norwegian ingredients and produce from the hotel’s own rooftop vegetable garden. Expect fabulous seafood and intense flavors from all over the world – deliciously presented. The wine list offers modern American and European wines.

Fine dining on food waste
According to the Eastern Norway Research Institute, every year we throw away 357,000 tons of food. And it’s not just consumers who are doing this: the food industry, the grocery industry and wholesalers are also throwing food away. Oslo and the rest of Norway are taking action to reduce this waste and a particularly exciting and tasty initiative is the Rest restaurant, which describes itself as “Fine dining on food waste”. They don’t serve up garbage, but use ingredients which for all kinds of reasons would otherwise never reach a plate. When newspaper DN visited, they were served immigrant oysters, eel taken from the sea for research purposes, fried rooster comb, chicken hearts, king crab and vegetables with a less-than-perfect appearance. One of the people behind this fairly recently opened restaurant is Jimmi Øien, who has worked at the Palace Grill and has a background with the Norwegian national culinary team.

Reuse is the new black
Oslo is the European Green Capital 2019. With this title come responsibilities! Many people have now become aware of the enormous climate impact of the clothes we wear – and often throw away. For a long time, people have been selling their finest clothes at Vestkanttorget, but a more systematic approach is now being taken to the concept of reuse. You’ll find more clothing exchange markets now, where you can swap items you no longer want or use for other used garments. There will be an exchange market on 6 April at Mesh, for example, which is a facility where small businesses can work – complete with café. Bring seven garments in exchange for seven swap coupons. Swap days will also be arranged for other equipment and items, even including seeds and seedlings.

Oslo Street Food has opened
Torggata is no longer a sad little link between downtown and Grünerløkka. The street has been given a facelift and now boutiques, bars and restaurants are all choosing to open up right here. A food court called Oslo Street Food has now opened at the old Torggata baths, with 16 kitchens and four bars all under one roof. Start your day here with breakfast or perhaps nip in for a bite to eat before heading off to a concert at Sentrum Scene or Rockefeller.

Oslo offers all genres of music throughout the spring. This year, you can experience everything from metal at the Inferno Metal Festival (infernofestival.no) from 18 to 21 April to church music at the Oslo International Church Music Festival (kirkemusikkfestivalen.no) from 22 to 31 March. On 25 and 26 May, the children’s festival takes place at Miniøya in Tøyenparken, with concerts and cultural experiences for all those who still have their milk teeth (minioya.no). Adults are admitted if accompanying children. Oslo Pride means sequins for everyone from 15 to 23 June (oslopride.no). Over Oslo starts on 19 June and lasts for four days. With bands such as Toto and a stunning view of the city, the festival is conveniently located at Grefsenkollveien (Overoslo.no). There’s no peace and quiet to be had in Oslo – all you can do is enjoy it.

Designer and boutique owner Kine Haugen isn’t interested in trends, but in understated elegance. That’s easy to see when you meet her, dressed immaculately in a perfect blazer. You’ll find cuts and styles from her beloved Italy in her boutique Stories by Kine in Frogner, in the west of Oslo. Now she’s also hunted out – and bottled – the perfect fragrance. She says that her recently launched perfume, Kine, has a feminine floral fragrance, with fresh fruit and a little mystical wood. Who’d have thought such a scent would be developed in Oslo?
