SAS Crew Tips: Paris

Photo: Le Grenier à Pain

Le Grenier à Pain
A small bakery in Montmartre that makes some of the best baguettes I’ve ever had – they’ve even won prizes for them! Pop in here and buy a few, but be aware that locals wait in line up and down the street on the weekends. Just a few meters from the bakery, on the same street, there’s a nice little cheese shop called La Butte Fromagère and a Greek and Italian deli selling delicious treats from their respective countries.

BOOT Café
My favorite café is in an old converted cobbler’s shop. It may be small, but it certainly doesn’t lack character. My best tip would be to come early, as the café only seats 6–10 people.

La Java
A well-hidden club in a beautiful Art Deco building. Edith Piaf and Django Reinhardt used to play here in the 1920s.

Musée d’Edith Piaf
This small, well-hidden museum is actually located in Edith Piaf’s old apartment and in a very intimate way it tells the story of Edith in her prime, as well as exhibiting some of her personal belongings. The museum is only open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and reservations have to be made via the owner. Entrance is free but a small tip is expected.

Photo: Refuge des Fondus

Refuge des Fondus
At this small, quirky restaurant, you’ll be seated at a long communal table and served a choice of meat or cheese fondue. Due to its limited size, you’ll most likely have to jump over tables to get to your seat – but don’t worry, staff are on hand to assist. Wine is served in baby bottles to eliminate the risk of tipping over glasses while jumping over the table. It’s a fun, original dining experience – but bring cash as they don’t accept credit cards.
